Curator Julie Wosk gives talk on Imaging Women in the Space Age

Julie Wosk, the curator of "Imaging Women in the Space Age", will explore depictions of female astronauts and aviators, as well as portrayals of space-age women in movies, fashion, and television.

Julie Wosk is a professor emerita of English, art history, and studio painting at SUNY Maritime in New York City. She is the author of five books, including “My Fair Ladies: Female Robots, Androids, and Other Artificial Eves,” which Wosk presented at Harvard University. In her latest book, “Artificial Women,” released in April 2024, Wosk examines the effect of AI-enhanced simulated females on our changing views of female identity.

Imaging Women in the Space Age showcases the achievements of America’s pioneering female astronauts and highlights achievements of pioneering and current female astronauts. From the earliest moon goddesses to today’s galactic fashions, visions of females in space have sparked the creative imagination.

“This exhibit with its colorful images celebrates courageous women flyers and astronauts, while capturing the excitement over space travel and space women seen in cultural images and fashion. Whether Artemis, the goddess of the moon, or today’s ground-breaking female astronauts making a milestone spacewalk, women continue to be an inspiration to us today.”
