Museum Educator
Position Summary:
The Museum Educator is responsible for the development and implementation of education and public programs. Programming includes educator-led programs, outreach, after school programs, summer camps, and assisting with teacher professional development workshops. The Museum Educator delivers curriculum consistent with the mission and vision of the Museum, current museum best practices and interpretive goals, and that meets state and national standards. Education and programming are delivered to diverse audiences which will include wide ranges of ages and ability levels.
Primary Functions and Major Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Education Manager, the Museum Educator will interact with the Collections, Curatorial, and Operations teams and audiences of all ages to perform the following duties:
Duties include:
- Assist with development of long-term educational exhibits: Work with the Curatorial team and others to develop displays, interactive and interpretive text for new long-term exhibits.
- Educator-Led Programs: Present educator-led programs for visiting K-12 school groups including pre-tour information for teachers, school tour content, and post-tour teacher evaluations. Assist in piloting and testing new educational programs and curricula materials. Align programs with the exhibitions, collections and mission of the Berkshire Museum following departmental models and educational philosophy, and compatible with MA, NY State and 21st century learning national standards.
- Curriculum: In collaboration with the Education Manager, assist with the development of curriculum consistent with the mission and vision of the Museum.
- Educational Outreach and Special Programs: Develop and present educational activities for a variety of on- and off-site programs including, but not limited to after-school programs, camps, classes and special programs for targeted populations. Participate in related community organizations as appropriate.
- Professional Development for Teachers and Museum Staff: Assist in the development, scheduling and presentation of workshops and programs for pre- and in-service professional development for teachers and museum staff. Maintaining current knowledge of educational (both school and museum) theories as well as local and national curricula and learning standards.
- Promotion and Marketing: Create and distribute promotional materials and advertisements for educational programs, including social media, radio interviews, newspaper articles and ads, and emails.
- Staff Support: Assist curatorial department with exhibit research; assist with special events or other duties as needed
- Maintain a good working relationship with regional schools and engage them in museum programming.
- Assist in researching and applying for grants to fund educational programs.
- Maintain accurate tracking records for grant reporting, board reports, strategic plans, etc.
- Maintain and update audio tours and docent manuals.
Qualifications:
- Coursework or degree in education or education-related field with previous training or teaching experience.
- Experience working with the public, in a museum or other public program setting preferred.
- Experience in developing education programs and curriculum.
- Excellent writing and public speaking skills
- Ability and desire to work with learners of all ages and abilities, with special focus on youth, families, and school personnel.
- Ability to communicate professionally with administrators, educators, and the general public.
- Must be self-motivated, organized, and goal oriented.
- Strong attention to detail and pro-active problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel. Ability to learn new software programs.
- Must be willing to help others succeed and be respectful of deadlines.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and climbing stairs with occasional lifting (30 lbs.)
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Candidate must maintain a current driver’s license, personal automobile insurance, and a safe driving record.
