Dear area teachers,
I would like to make you aware of a STEM professional development opportunity offered by Berkshire Museum and the Museum Institute for Teaching Science (MITS). This year’s institute is being sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), which means that the $400 registration fee is waived for all participating teachers. MITS is a two-week professional development institute for 3rd – 8th grade teachers offering dynamic, hands-on science and literacy training. The dates of the Institute this year are weekdays July 8 – 19 from 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
The title of this year’s MITS is Connecting Science and Literacy: Investigate it, Read it, Write it, Talk it! Throughout the two weeks, you will explore what inquiry learning is and why it is important. In addition, you will explore ways to integrate science and literacy using minds-on, hands-on activities for students. As an end product, you will develop inquiry-based science lessons, tailored to your classroom and teaching styles, which will tie into both Massachusetts STEM and ELA frameworks.
This is a rare and great opportunity in which I hope you can participate. Also, If you know of colleagues who might be interested and benefit from this course, I encourage you to pass this email along to them. The registration deadline is June 17, though late registrants will be accepted space permitting. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.
