Henry Klimowicz: Paper and Light
Friday, 09/03 - Sunday, 01/16

A new site-specific installation is open at our Wider Window Gallery. We are thrilled to see how Henry Klimowicz has transformed the space with his remarkable Paper and Light, composed of disused cardboard carefully re-configured and arranged. It conjures thoughts of the meticulous work of insects, while incorporating available light almost as another element of the exhibition. “We live in a world enveloped in thoughts of value," Henry says. "My use of cardboard, a valueless material, releases me from the heart of this cultural confine.” Come by and take a look!

Paper and Light is part of the Housatonic Paper Trail, a celebration of the history and impact of the paper industry in the region. The history of Berkshire Museum is inextricably linked with that of the Crane family, who founded the Museum as well as the innovative paper-makers Crane and Co. In addition to Henry's installation, the Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation will display historical items from its own collection and from the Crane Museum of Papermaking, presenting a practical history of the work of Crane & Co. through the years. The small exhibit will contain items like linen samples used in making Crane's signature bank note paper, linen samples, early bank notes, a dandy roll and short videos showing the production process.

Entrance to Henry Klimowicz: Paper and Light and the Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation is by regular Museum admission.

Woodland Style
Saturday, 09/04 - Sunday, 01/02

The beauty and inspiration of the outdoors comes inside for Woodland Style, a new multi-artist exhibition on view at Berkshire Museum. Woodland Style is curated by local author Marlene Marshall, based on her new book of the same name, published by Storey Publishing.

woodland2The woodland-inspired artist has much to work with, and the results are frequently innovative, surprising, and thought-provoking. Woodland Style features the work of artists who have been inspired by nature, in some cases even integrating natural mixed-media elements. The natural world has long offered profound inspiration to man’s spirit, creativity and imagination. Woodland Style seeks to re-ignite the wonder found in the most familiar elements of nature that surround us—be it a simple twig, pine cone, pile of acorns or a vine wrapping up a tree. This work provides a fresh look at the everyday miracles offered by the natural world.

Wrapped! Search for the Essential Mummy
Saturday, 06/19 - Sunday, 10/31

wrapped

Pahat, Berkshire Museum's world-famous mummy, will be the centerpiece for the debut of Wrapped! a travelling exhibition that includes Egyptian artifacts from the Akhimim region. Two other mummies on loan to the Museum will join Pahat, each in its own richly decorated sarcophagus. Wrapped! explores the long-held fascination with Egyptian mummies as a source of inspiration as well as a significant shift in Western sensibilities toward these important artifacts. Wrapped! examines the relatively recent role of modern forensic analysis in Egyptian studies, presenting the work of specialists who use CT-scans to reconstruct the appearance of people from the ancient Egyptian community of Akhmim. These forensic reconstructions put a human face on the past, contributing to an enlightened understanding of a single community and the more compassionate treatment of mummies. The exhibition was developed by Jonathan Elias, Ph.D., Director of the Akhmim Mummy Studies Consortium (AMSC), which is conducting an on-going and sustained effort to understand the ancient population and mummies of Akhmim. In addition to three significant mummies, Wrapped! also includes ancient mummified cats, falcons, and a crocodile. Fascinating artifacts, including funerary scarabs, necklaces, amulets, vessels, figurines, and headdresses, as well as historical documents related to the trade and study of mummies, will surround the sarcophagi in the Berkshire Museum's galleries. The exhibition illuminates the rise in popularity of Egyptology among Western European scientists, addressing on the destructive 19th century practice of public "unrollings" of mummies. Interactive displays will allow visitors to make their way through a tomb, participate in a mummy-wrapping activity, and view a video on forensic reconstruction methods. Wrapped! will also include a variety of public events and educational programs.

Get Low
Friday, 09/10 - Thursday, 09/16
getlow Featuring unforgettable performances from Robert Duvall, Bill Murray, and Sissy Spacek, Get Low is based on an American folktale that has been passed down by storytellers for decades, spreading across distance and time to take on the proportions of a larger-than-life legend: that of the eccentric hermit known as Felix “Bush,” who temporarily came out of hiding to throw a grand funeral bash for himself while he was still very much alive and kicking. Now, the story has taken on another incarnation: inspiring a motion picture that peers behind the folklore to unfold the colorful drama of a man‘s last-ditch quest for redemption.

To draw a crowd to this highly irregular memorial, Felix sold lottery tickets offering his valuable plot of land as the prize; and the ploy worked. In the end, it was said that as many as 12,000 mourners from at least 14 different states showed up on June 26, 1938 -- including a Life Magazine photographer and major newspaper reporters -- to pay their respects to Felix... as he watched it all transpire.

In a rave review, The Wall Street Journal called Get Low "essential viewing."
